Newman chairman in truck collision
Newman Estate Agents chairman Sean Newman has suffered horrific injuries following a collision with a truck while on a charity cycle in the US.
The truck hit Newman, 43, on interstate 90 in Louisiana on Saturday while travelling at 70 miles-per-hour, breaking his legs, back and pelvis.
He has undergone surgery and been moved to another hospital today where he is expected to undergo further surgery within the next seven to 10 days. He is said to have been making good progress.
Newman and his friend James Golding, 29, were aiming to cycle 3,500 miles across America in 30 day to raise £100,000 for cancer charities following Golding’s recovery from the illness a year ago.
From his hospital bed, Golding, who suffered broken ribs and cuts from the collision, says: "I’m being discharged tomorrow and I’m hoping to get a flight home Wednesday evening, landing Thursday morning.
"I have to go collect what is left of both bikes tomorrow from the state trooper. I'm told Sean’s is in three peaces and mine isn’t looking good, but after that we have a 900-mile drive to Miami airport."
To his well-wishers, he adds: "Thank you so much for all the support you have given, it has really helped in many ways we hope you will never know."
Newman’s wife and two children are understood to have flown to the US to be by his side.
