Property grad launches free portal

A property graduate has launched a free property portal, which aims to challenge established subscription-based models using Google content.

Called The Big Property List, the independent portal has created a feed, a data format, which sources updated content, which in this case is the stock displayed on Google Maps.

The Big Property List displays the stock in the traditional property portal list format, rather than the mapping used by Google.

The site is free for both house hunters and agents and follows the launch of
Google Maps Property Search in June.

Only properties uploaded onto Google Maps will appear on the new site, with an opt-out facility available for those who prefer not to have their stock listed.

James Cole, managing director of the site and a former Vodafone commercial business manager, says: “It’s about choice. People may choose to use us over Rightmove, but obviously Rightmove has got a huge market share.”

He adds: “Estate agents fork out millions of pounds a year to advertise on nationwide sites. There will be no reason to do this anymore, with thebigpropertylist.co.uk and Google providing the same service, in a familiar style, for free.”
